Well Thanksgiving is done and gone for the year and if you are like most people, you have been going a mile a minute. If this is the case, then you need to read this post because I am going to show you something that will help relax you once you get a minute to sit down. A homemade lavender eye mask.
I have not sewn in a long time but my interest has peaked again because of Pinterest. If you have not discovered this wonderful site, you definitely need to check it out. It has given me so many DIY ideas. I love it. You can follow my boards by clicking on my Pinterest button on the right.
In searching for lavender eye mask on Pinterest, I found several sites which gave me ideas on how to create this one. Most of sites gave directions for very easy ones where you just sew the flax seeds and lavender straight into the inside of your mask but I wanted to create one that could be washed and this is what I came up with where I have the ingredients in a separate bag. I used a tutorial from Chubby Hobby to create mine. You can see this in the above picture. I used muslim material to create the inside bag and used two different flannel materials to create the outside cover. I really like how it turned out in the below picture. I have to smile because this eye mask did not cost me anything to make except for the flax seeds and lavender. I got all the material from Freecycle.
The great thing about this mask is that it can be warmed or cooled. Place the eye mask in a freezer bag and cool for 30 minutes. This would help with eye puffiness and also with achy joints. You can warm the mask in the microwave for 15 to 30 SECONDS. Be very careful on heating the mask though. This would be great after a hectic day like shopping or cooking Thanksgiving dinner or just any day for that matter.
I will say this is a great piece for a beginner sewer. You will be really happy with the results and can use it immediately to cover those tired eyes from the sewing, HA!

National Oatmeal Day
This past Saturday, October 29 was National Oatmeal Day so I thought I would do a post on oatmeal. Oatmeal is something that I have so many mornings that I actually keep a canister of it at work in case I am running late. It is easy to use and so many fun and delicious items can be added to it.
One thing I want to discuss is make sure you are using the Old Fashion oats or steel cut oats. You will find on the ingredients list, just oats. This way you are not getting added sugar or other chemicals. Below is a picture of instant oatmeal compared to plain old fashion oats. Do you see a difference?
They are made by the same company but the instant oatmeal has lots more ingredients in it. I will grab these in a pinch but not really often anymore. I actually grabbed this one when I was staying at a hotel in Miami recently and added it to my luggage in case I needed something quick to eat. However if you have time, I recommend using the old fashioned oats. I actually will measure out a cup of these and add it to a snack ziplock. Then add some slivered almonds, stevia, cran-raisins or other ingredients and just grab these when I am walking out the door. You really do not need to cook the old fashion oats, just pour boiling water on top of the oats in a cup or bowl, stir, and then cover for 2 minutes. They will be wonderful. Then you can add apples, or other fruit.
I also like to make mine in the crockpot overnight. Here is a great recipe for Slow Cooked Pumpkin Oatmeal.

October 2011 Birchbox & BlissmoBox
This is the second month that I have received a Birchbox and I was so excited when I opened this one. I am thrilled about all five products. Below is a brief description of each one.
1. AHAVA cleansing cream. This says that it will wash away dirt, oil and makeup. It is also for all skins types. I like this product. It does not have a smell and made my skin feel good.
2. BEFINE Lip Serum. This serum heals and smoothes cracked or dry lips. It states it has Chamomile and Beets in it on the label. I used it one time before I noticed the Chamomile in the product. See I am allergic to Chamomile but did not have any problems the one time I used it. I will say it makes your lips really moist.
3. LAURA GELLER Spackle Tinted Under Makeup Primer in Bronze. This primer gives you a flawless foundation and a subtle glow. This has a very light feel on the skin and it seems to warm up my skin color.
4. OROFLUIDO Beauty Elixir. This is a hair treatment that has everyone's favorite oils, argan, linseed, and cyperus). Plus has a heavenly vanilla amber scent. The smell alone makes me want to use this product all the time. I also have very long, think hair and it seems to help with my dry ends.
5. THE LAUNDRESS Delicate Wash. I was really excited to get this product. I have read about it on Pinterest. I have not used it yet but look forward to trying it out. Our delicates need to be treated with loving care since they are the closest thing to our body.
Overall this box has great products in it. I have been very pleased with all of them. If you are interested in a Birchbox, check out this link.
Also if you would like to check out this month's Blissmo Box. See the video below. This was my first box by Blissmo and it was ok. Was expecting a little more from the box but we will see how next month's box is before really making a final decision on keeping this box.

10 Things I Love About Fall
Working on a campus really makes you think about fall each year. New students, new friends, new supplies, new clothes, and many more new things. When most people think about the fall season, they think about harvesting the land and storing ripe foods, which brings me to the first thing that I love about fall.
1. Pumpkins. I love pumpkins for decorating, eating, or drinking. A couple of items I love with pumpkin is Pumpkin Spice Latte, here is my recipe. I also tried a new recipe for Slow Cooker Pumpkin Oatmeal that is delicious. One other thing I enjoy snacking on is Toasted Pumpkin Seeds.
2. Decorations. I usually never decorate my house but do in the fall. The pumpkins and mums immediately are purchased and placed in my front yard. I love the fabrics of fall, the Halloween Decorations, plus the colors of fall. So beautiful.
3. Parents Visiting. Once a year my parents drive out and spend about a week and a half with me. They live on the east coast and I do not get to see them much so this is a great chance for me to enjoy them and enjoy lots of activities with each one of them. I smile because we always stand in front of the house the morning that they are leaving to take pictures. Here are a couple.
10. Cooking. My mind starts racing on food this time of year. I want to bake apple pies and cook everything in the Crockpot. I want to try new recipes and eventually try canning vegetables and maybe make some jam.

4. Football. As I stated above I work for The University of Oklahoma. If you know anything about college football, you have heard of the Sooners. Living in a football town, you really MUST love football. It is all around you with cars, people, and the noises. I love it. I was lucky this year and went to a game with my dad where we sat on the 50 yard line. Such great memories. Also this year I am in a Fantasy Football league with my dad and brothers. It is so much fun calling them and talking football.
5. Fashion. I love the boots, the bags, the layers, and getting to wear jeans. I love wrapping up in a warm comfortable sweater. I love the colors and In Style magazine September Issue feels like it could weigh you down with all the fashion. Check it out.
6. Activities. There are a million activities to attend. Fall Festivals, Football, Golf Tournaments, Apple Picking, Haunted Houses, Homecoming, National Weather Center Open House, and many more.
7. Walks. I walk about 360 out of 365 days in a year. Walks are wonderful this time of year because the mornings are cooler and so are the nights. The sky is amazing with lots and lots of stars and I just could gaze for hours. I feel this chill in the air and get to wrap up in gloves and a warm hat. Plus my dog that is covered in fur, bounces down the street.
8. New TV. I really do not watch TV because I do not have cable but there are so many new shows and old favorites that I eventually try to catch up on in the fall on Netflix or Hulu because I end up staying indoors more.
9. Books. I love reading this time of year. Since it is getting colder I do stay inside more than usual and I love to sit on the couch and read. Also reading outside by a fire on the weekends. I set up a challenge this year to read 100 books and so far I have read 54. Fall is a time for me to catch up because I am 25 books behind for this time of the year. Follow me on Goodreads.com.
10. Cooking. My mind starts racing on food this time of year. I want to bake apple pies and cook everything in the Crockpot. I want to try new recipes and eventually try canning vegetables and maybe make some jam.

Pina Colada Protein Shake
Like Pina Coladas, this is a great likeness without the alcohol.
I fixed this today for the first time and loved it. My stomach has been giving me fits and I think it is because when my parents were visiting recently and we ate out a lot. I am not used to eating out much at all, so I have had to treat my body with some extra care this week.
In order to do this, I eat a lot of fruit in the morning and then this for my mid-morning snack.
1/2 cup unsweetened vanilla almond milk
1/2 banana
4 oz of pineapple juice
1 scoop vanilla protein powder
1 tsp of chia seeds
2 Tbs of granola
4 - 5 ice cubes
pinch of unsweetened coconut on top
Mix everything together in blender and then pour into your favorite glass. This has a great taste and I love that the granola and chia seeds are at the bottom of the glass. It is like a cherry on top for me to eat last. Yum!

Bacon, Bacon Is that Real Bacon?
Every once in awhile I like to treat myself to bacon, so I want to show you the best way to cook bacon. You will fall in love with this method that my brother, Michael taught me several years ago.
You need to line a cookie sheet with aluminum foil and then lay your slices of bacon on the pan.
I enjoy center cut because I have read that it is leaner and has less sodium than turkey bacon or regular bacon.
Next, put the bacon in a cold oven at 350 degrees for 18 - 20 minutes. Ovens may vary so you will just need to watch the first time you cook the bacon. After the bacon comes out of the oven, you will need to drain the grease and pat the bacon with paper towels to get rid of the grease on the strips. Then help yourself to perfectly cooked bacon. It is crisp and delicious.

Tears Rolling Down My Cheeks
I am mortified, upset, embarrassed, angry, sad, regretful, happy, tearful and lost.
Today started off as a great day. My parents are here and I am feeling content. Dad went golfing early in the morning and I left mom reading a book as I went to work. I slowly dug through my list and talked with coworkers as my day progressed. Then mom calls saying “OMG, are you on your way?” I said, “Yes.”
See we were attending a trunk show at an upscale store called Caymans. My mom called because everyone was dressed in riches and I think she was feeling a little uncomfortable. I arrived feeling excited and anxious to see what was going on at the store. I found mom and she had saved me a seat. I proceeded to get some food and sit down to eat. I was already stressing over feeling uncomfortable because the chairs were sitting so close and I knew that I would be very squished while eating. However, I wanted to talk to my mom and enjoy myself.
Well not two minutes after sitting down to eat, did the chair break on me. It actually happened as I was turning to get up but still it happened. I do not think this would be that bad of a situation unless you realize that I am extremely overweight. Knowing this now, what do you think was going through my mind? I was upset but trying to ignore what happened.
A girl saw immediately what happened and said to me, “Oh those chairs they are so troublesome” but could imagine what she was thinking. I then left to go to the makeup counter to see what was new. Anything to get away but also in my mind is the only thing I can look at is makeup. I cannot fit into any of their clothes so the makeup counter is a comfortable area to me. I think this is also why I buy lots of makeup because I feel like it is an area that I can deal with while not dealing with my weight or not acknowledging the problem.
Well I felt terrible because my mom was sitting in the chair wondering where I went. I went over to tell her that I was really embarrassed and could not sit down in the chairs again because I was so worried that it would happen again. After wandering around the store for a while, they told us the show was going to start and I just felt sick to my stomach because everybody was taking a seat and I just could not sit down. I then told my mom, that I needed to leave because I was upset. I made sure she was ok because she was dealing with some issues herself. She said she understood but I really felt that I had let her down by not staying with her.
As I left the store, tears rolled down my cheeks. So many thoughts were going through my mind. Why? Why? The funny part was I truly was not worried about the people and their thoughts but what I was feeling inside me. I was mortified with myself!!!
Thoughts kept going through my head that I need to lose weight, I need to change, I need.., I need.., I need…. But I only could think of food. Please do not remember this last sentence as a cry for food but as true hunger. I was then embarrassed that I needed to eat. What is wrong with this statement?
As humans we have to eat but this situation put so many thoughts in my mind that I was beating myself up on eating. I continued to be sad and cried all the way back to my office but told myself I was going to reflect on this experience. Being overweight is not only physically uncomfortable but also mentally uncomfortable.

Slow Cooked Pumpkin Oatmeal
I have been on a roll using my slow cooker and last night decided to try to cook pumpkin oatmeal overnight. It worked and was delicious. Here is the recipe:
1 can pumpkin or 3 cups fresh pumpkin (peeled, seeded and cut into chunks)
5 cups water
1 and a 1/2 cups steel cut oatmeal
1/4 cup agave syrup or sweetener of your choice
1 TBS brown sugar (I omitted this time because I do not like my oatmeal sweet)
1 tsp nutmeg
1 tsp cinnamon
1/2 tsp salt
Mix all ingredients very well in slow cooker. Cook overnight for 6- 8 hours on low. Will come out very creamy and delicious after stirring in morning. I added unsweetened coconut and slivered almonds plus a little bit of walnuts that were left over.
This recipe makes a lot, around 8 cups so cut in half if needed but I am going to try and freeze some for later use. I also am going to try freezing in an ice cube tray to add flavor to yogurt. Will let you know the results in a later post. Enjoy!

September Birch Box
Have you heard of Birchbox? I hadn't until recently when I was on Pinterest and found someone talking about this small box with makeup samples that is shipped each month for $10. So with further research I found myself intrigued by this little box.
This past Saturday, my first box arrived and I immediately opened it to lots of goodies. What could be inside this box? Watch my video review and forgive the lighting in the video. Not sure what was going on.

Warm Triple Berry Sauce
I am going to Peru soon so I am trying to eat all the goodies in my refrigerator and freezer. This morning I got up trying to figure out what to eat for breakfast because I am pretty much out of fruit. However, I have a bag of frozen blueberries, raspberries, and blackberries. So I got the idea to make homemade waffles with a berry sauce. They turned out delicious and I have breakfast for several days.
This sauce is so easy to make. Below is the recipe:
1 cup frozen berries (your choice)
2 packets of stevia or sweetener of your choice
2 TBS cold water
1 TBS cornstarch
Put the berries in a pot over low to medium heat. Do not add the water. Liquid will form when the fruit starts to thaw. When the berries start to thaw, add your sweetener. Then cook for about 5 minutes until berries are thawed and sweetener is dissolved.
Next whisk together the cold water and cornstarch until dissolved. Then add to the berry mixture and stir until thickened. Try and keep berries whole.
You can double or triple the recipe. Use as a topping on anything. I put this on waffles but it would also be good on angel food cake.

How Far? Really?
Do you ever truly think about where your food comes from? I do. Lately it has really been on my mind because of recalls and an article that I read about the footprint of our food. So after doing some checking, I was shocked. This post mainly deals with canned food. I will talk about fresh and frozen on another post.
After cleaning out my cabinet where I keep canned food. I noticed most things came from the US. Like the salsa, diced tomatoes, green beans, and asparagus. But the water chestnuts and mandarian oranges came from China. The pineapple came from Philippines and my sun-dried tomatoes came from Turkey.
If you think about this, these countries are a long way from the states and travel for miles to get to us. I wonder how old the food I am eating is? I will say I do not eat a lot of canned food. Mainly tomato products, pumpkin, and soups.
It is truly amazing when you start looking at the cans and realize where they originated. They have traveled a long way. So I dare you to start looking at your canned food, notice where the food originated from, and think about the process that it took to get into the can that you are opening.

7 Day Slim Down Review
I finished the Tone It Up 7 Day Slim Down this past week and wanted to review the plan. I had lots of success on the plan by losing 4 pounds. The main benefits from the plan that I learned are:
1) Drink your water. Add fruit if needed but get at least 90 ounces in a day. It really is easier than you think.
2) Make the majority of your plate, fruit and veggies. You will find yourself eating less calories and becoming full by doing this.
3) Try new products. If you do not like something, try something else. I used to stick to the same veggies but now I branch out and try new ones.
4) Also use tools that make it easier to cook or eat. I found water bottles that I love and non-stick pans that made cooking and clean up a breeze. If it is easier to eat healthy, I bet you will do it.
5) Plan. I did have one mess up eating the wrong thing because I did not review the plan for the day but it was not a big deal. I just went back and re-read everything. I also created a board to help me plan my days which made life so much easier.
6) Find exercise that you enjoy. I went to the pool and did laps because I love the water. I didn't feel like I was exercising. I also started listening to audio books on tape while I walked. This helped me to increase my distance because my mind was stimulated too.
7) Don't be afraid to put yourself out there. I started doing these videos and I know that I do not look the best but I love that it is a record of my journey.
8) Last but not least, get a support system. I love Tone It Up support on twitter. I have found so many others that tweet their success about Tone It Up or another plan and learn from them. There are definitely other people out there like you and I know that would be glad to help if you just ask.
So here is a video to wrap up my review. Enjoy.

7 Day Slim Down Day 4
I cannot believe it is already day 4. Here is my bootycall.
This really has not been that bad but I will tell you a couple times I have had some cravings but have worked through them or figured out the best thing for these cravings.
Most of my meals were very similar today except I had the most delicious dark sweet cherries rather than grapefruit on meal 2.
I also switched up my meal 3. I did not want fish or chicken today so I had something I bought last night on top of my salad. I bought them because I had a coupon, buy one, get one free. Well I am glad that I did, these patties are delicious. Here is the product.
Realize that these are NOT on the plan. I just needed something different. Actually they are not that bad except for the fat which is 28g but each patty has 21g of protein. I will take this protein with this kind of flavor every once in awhile.
If you will notice the drink I had with my meal. This is also a new product to me which I really like. They are very refreshing and called La Croix. They are naturally flavored sparkling water and the ones I bought were BERRY flavored. So good with strawberries in my glass. I tend to like gaseous water more than plain.
Meal 4 ended up being a protein Popsicle rather than a shake because it was 109 degrees today. I used a GNC protein powder that is the best taking cookies and cream flavor that I have found. This protein powder is low in sugar and high in protein. Calories are not bad either around 70 per scoop.
Here is how to make the protein popsicle. It is so easy but make sure that you get pasteurized egg whites. This way they are safe to eat.
One last product I wanted to share with you I found last night at Walmart and I already love it. It smells so good and is not greasy. It is Hawaiian Tropic's After Sun in Lime Coolada. Since I have been outside so much lately, I wanted a good aftercare product and this is a great one.
I will be heading out later tonight for another bit of exercise. Need to wait until it cools off again. Tomorrow is a more restrictive day on the plan and that is ok because today I have felt a little bloated. I will say that when I got on the scale this morning, I have lost 2 lbs. This made me very happy because I had been stuck at 8 lbs and now I am at 10 lbs. So lets see what tomorrow brings!

7 Day Slim Down Day 3
Hi! Today was Day 3 of the Tone It Up 7 Day slim down for me. I will tell you that this day was a lot easier than yesterday. I think what helped was that I got a good night sleep. Yesterday I had a little mistake in my eating so this morning I created a board to help me keep track of what I was doing for the day and month. Using the post-its makes it easy to change my meals.
So if you remember the past two days I started off with a 30 minute walk with Chloe. Today was not any different. You can check out my video. I also need to say that I was off from work today so it made it a lot easier to stick to the plan.
Meal 1 was a protein pancake. I will say that I love these. If you have not tried them, you need to because they are really tasty. Here is a picture of mine. Usually I never can get them to flip but I did today.
If you would like to know how to make them, watch Karena and Katrina.
There are different variations too! I have made a lemon one with blueberries that is sooooo good.
Meal 2 was grapes again.
Meal 3 was leftover salad from yesterday with iced tea.
Next, I went to the pool. It was packed but I got in a little over 20 minutes of laps plus a little bit of sun.
Once I got home from the pool, I was starved. So I got my meal 4 which was a protein shake. I did the same one from Day 1. The Mocha Chocolate Protein Shake. This shake is delicious. After I let this settle, I was still very hungry and felt like I needed an extra boost because the sun took a lot of energy out of me. So I drank a Zico Passion Fruit Coconut Water. These are the best and I think they work like Gatorade.
Ok, so I made it through all of this and I was sitting on the couch watching some TV and realize it was getting very, very hot in my house. It hit me that my air conditioner was not working again. This has happened about 3 times already. So I turned the air off and waited for 30 minutes and turned it back on. Realize that my house was sitting at 89 degrees at this point. I did get it to come back on but it is taking forever to cool back down because it was 107 degrees outside when it went off. I ended up with a headache after all this and really did not want to eat my dinner. Actually what I wanted to do was go to Sonic, but I didn't. I ended up just fixing some greek yogurt with strawberries, chia seeds, and chai tea. I thought the chai tea would give it a little kick. It was ok. Might experiment more later. This was not my original dinner planned but it was better than Sonic.
So overall I feel like I had a very successful day. Lets see what tomorrow brings.

7 Day Slim Down Day 2
It is day 2 of the Tone It Up Slim Down and I will tell you I woke up tired. I did not sleep the greatest so I am thinking this is some of it. I did do my 30 minute bootycall this morning with Chloe. It was a little difficult because of being tired but it was done.
My first meal was the slim down scramble again. After eating it though, I realized I was supposed to have a protein pancake. It pays to read over the plan each day, which I will now be doing.
This is an egg white scramble with mushrooms, spinach, and Ms. Dash for seasoning. I drank a large cup of water with this meal.
Remember that you need to consume about half your body weight in water. They recommend getting at least 90 ounces of water in a day while on the slim down. This has not been trouble for me. The more water I drink, the more I want to consume.
Meal 2 consisted of grapes this morning. I am trying to use up the fruits I had in the fridge.
After this meal, I was extremely hungry. Tried to drink water to take the edge off. Helped a little. I will also tell you that my energy level was almost non-exist at this point. I feel this happens when I cut out all carbs from my diet. The first couple of days are bad and then I get my energy back. I think everyone is different though.
Meal 3 was switched for meal 4. I ate my snack before my salad because I was still so hungry. I ended up having carrots and some hummus.
Next I ate my salad. This ended up being very good. I had the Morningstar crumbles which I added Ms Dash Southwest Chipolte seasoning. Heated the crumbles in the microwave and then topped on the salad with lettuce, zucchini, squash, mushrooms, and sugar snaps. It was really delicious.
I thought I would make it to the pool and then said no, but I did end up going and swam some laps and played in the water for awhile.
I also did these exercises to the best of MY ability. I was like Karena. Kept falling off.
Not sure if I will have meal 6 tonight. I am not very hungry now and probably will just watch some TV or read and hit the bed early. Day 3 is close!

These were actually fun. Wish I was on the beach like K&K though.
My dinner ended up being the fish packets that I had last night. They were very easy and really tasty so I though why not do the same thing.

7 Day Slim Down Day 1
Well I have made it through Day 1 of the Tone It Up 7 day slim down. I was not sure what to expect but it wasn't that hard at all. First Chloe and I got out for a 30 minute walk.
I felt really great after this walk and was ready for the day. Next came Meal 1 which was called the slim down scramble. This consists of spinach, mushrooms, and egg whites with Ms Dash. It really calls for tomatoes but I did not have them. I also forgot to buy spinach so I used some frozen chopped spinach. I actually liked it better. Eat this with a big glass of water. I also made coffee with almond milk but this will be something I have to get used to because I usually like my coffee with heavy cream.

Meal 2 consists of fruit. Supposed to be a grapefruit but I used the remaining strawberries that I had on hand. I did not want them to go bad.
Also something that they taught me is to add fruit to your water. I have loved this because sometimes you just get tired of drinking plain water. Today I added strawberries and limes.
Meal 3 was a huge salad which I put zuchinni, squash, mushrooms, and topped it with leftover turkey burger. I also added some Raspberry Vinagrette. I am not a fan of dressing at all but do not mind this one. It actually was very good on this salad.
I next went to the pool. It is really hot in Oklahoma this year but I love the pool. This gave me a chance to do the second part of my exercise. I did laps and water walking for 30 plus minutes.
Meal 4 came after the pool. I loved this one. I made a Mocha Chocolate Protein Shake. Just take 1/2 cup of water, scoop of chocolate protein powder, 1 tsp of instant coffee, and 5 ice cubes. Blend away. It is so good. Like a Frappuccino.
Meal 5 included fish, zucchini, mushrooms, and squash cooked in a foil packet. I added a little bit of Ms. Dash, olive oil, and chicken stock.
I also want to mention that I went ahead and cut up mushrooms, zucchini, and squash so that it is already ready for tomorrow's meals. I have learned that if I do this, I am more apt to use them.
Meal 6 was a little greek yogurt topped with stevia, cinnamon, and slivered almonds. I LOVE greek yogurt and this was a great way to end my day of food.
To wrap up everything. I would say I have gotten about nine cups of fruit and veggies into my meals today. That is great. Way more than the recommended serving amounts. I also feel pretty full today. I will say that I was extremely tired though. Might be the heat.
Well until tomorrow.
